25 Nov ADHD and Tech
You have ADHD. What does it mean? What do you do next?
You’re familiar with the symptoms, you relate to the videos. When folks describe it, it feels like they’re talking about you specifically. Maybe you’ve been able to navigate the system and get diagnosed. Knowing for sure is great but now you’ve got that part down, you probably want to know what it means.
What is ADHD?
In the simplest terms, ADHD affects your ability to regulate your attention span. If something’s boring, it’s hard to pay attention to. If something’s interesting then minutes can turn to hours as you get invested in it. It’s a pretty universal experience sure, but for you it feels like more. If a task is boring the focus barrier may as well be The famed ADHD hyperfocus that we hear about is real, but it is a trade-off.
Chances are you can shift focus well between tasks well. If you do it right, you’re surfing the wave of where your attention needs to go more so than getting distracted. Are these the same thing? Maybe, but you’re doing the latter
There is more to it, but we’ll build into that as we go. For now we’ll keep our focus on the attention aspect and why that makes IT an excellent place to be for us.
The world of tech is defined by variety
With how many systems you’ll be dealing with in each tech space, no two days will be the same. In any tech environment, you will be dealing with a bunch of different systems, some of which play well together and some which don’t. As an IT Engineer especially, you’ll be the one keeping the balance. When Microsoft 365 apps won’t work together, when firewalls fall over, when AWS suffers an outage. Maybe a laptop won’t work right or a printer won’t print. You’ll be the one to call.
Projects and problems big and small will be your make up your daily life and your inadvertent ability shift focus in and prioritise on the fly will a massive asset.
Problem solving
You’ve probably noticed you have a slightly different approach to problem solving than a lot of people. Not better or worse necessarily, but there are times when you can cut through the layers of an issue and the solution at the core seems obvious. This is another area where ADHD and Tech come together and harmonise. Maybe your brain is wired the same as the folks that made the technology because when it breaks, you can usually figure out why. We’re here to get you that step further to fixing it.
Tech Opportunities
There’s an old perception around that to get into tech, be it programming or engineering, you need to be a straight laced math wizard and work in the Tech Wizard cave. In the modern tech industry that’s just not the case. IT needs people who can prioritise problems on the fly, approach small jobs and big ones with the same energy, people who can look at problems from odd angles where solutions may not be obvious from the usual approach.
If you have ADHD or think you do, chances are the tech industry is for you. Our unique approach to teaching tech has resulted in excellent outcome for a variety of students from across a variety of spectrums and New Zealand needs Cloud Engineers, Tech Support and every tech role in between.
